Great Western Brewing again seeks the help of beer scientists to better understand the “Beer Chill Factor”.

With temperatures in some places on the Prairies dipping below -30 degrees, Great Western Brewing has announced, that once again, the search to fully comprehend the “Beer Chill Factor” is on. Inspiring scientists and beer drinkers alike are being called upon to submit their research studies.

There’s a Canadian house-party tradition of chilling one’s beers outside in the snow when fridge space is at a premium. Due to the current extremely cold temperatures again this year and the concern for beer freeze, Great Western Brewing is again commissioning a scientific study in how to safely accomplish the perfect beer chill … maximizing chill while minimizing freezing. Factors such as cans versus bottles, in the pack or directly in the snow, number of beers, starting temperature, wind chill, and how thirsty the scientist, all can affect the Beer Chill Factor.

Now in it’s second year, the Beer Chill Factor program was born in January 2008 when temperatures on the Canadian prairie hit a mind-numbing global low of negative 51 degrees celsius (negative 60 Farenheit). Last year’s overwhelming response to arguably one of the greatest scientific experiments ever conducted by beer drinkers, saw Regina, Saskatchewan natives Greg Longman and his fellow aspiring co-scientists heeding the call, and were recognized for their invaluable advancements in the field of beer chill science. Last year’s winning submission and detailed analysis can be found on the www.greatwesternbrewing.com website.

Despite last year’s winning submission being quite detailed, Great Western Brewing believes that this cause is far too important to stop now. “Necessity breeds ingenuity – and making sure you don’t freeze one of your Great Western beers is one such necessity,” says Ron Waldman, President and CEO of Great Western Brewing. Waldman adds, “We must continue to push forward and work collectively toward our common goal of solving the Beer Chill Factor, because when you craft-brew some of the best beer in the world … one frozen Great Western is one too many.”
