Great Western Brewing’s “Beer Chill Factor” Winners Announced
Saskatoon, Sk – Great Western Brewing has announced the winners from hundreds of responses sent in for the Great Western Beer Chill Factor program. The winning entry came from Greg Longman of Regina whose study was assisted by aspiring co-scientists Kevin “GB” Gregorie, Gerald “the pirate” Toth, and Bill Mackay.
The Beer Chill Factor program was born in late January 2008 when temperatures in Saskatchewan hit a global low, negative 51 degrees celsius (negative 60 Farenheit). There’s a Canadian tradition of chilling one’s beers outside while at a winter party, when fridge or freezer space is at a premium. Due to the extremely cold temperatures and the concern for beer freeze, Great Western Brewing wanted to commission a scientific study in how to safely accomplish the perfect beer chill … maximizing chill while minimizing freezing.
Great Western Brewing was overwhelmed with submissions from around the world – some from engineers, some from scientists, some from postal workers, and some from millworkers – but all were beer lovers, and each were motivated to send in submissions by their love of enjoying a perfectly chilled, quality-crafted beer.
Great Western Brewing President and CEO Ron Waldman announced, “While it may be a tad beyond our domain to say Greg Longman and his scientific colleagues ‘solved’ this troubling puzzle per se, their thirst for knowledge definitely pushed the boundaries of science and moved us all to a greater understanding and appreciation of the Beer Chill Factor.”
The winning team received a Great Western prize pack which included a Great Western beer fridge to ensure their Great Western beer is always frosty cold, in addition to receiving warm Great Western toques, helpful should their studies take them into the Canadian cold again in the future.
Waldman made a further request to the representatives from the winning garage laboratory, “It is our sincere hope that Greg and his team do not rest on their laurels, but rather that they carry on with their research and light the way for the others who will come after them. We must continue to work collectively toward our common goal of solving the Beer Chill Factor, because when you craft-brew some of the best beer in the world … one frozen Great Western is one too many.”
