Great Western Light wins Best Standard Lager in the World at the World Beer Awards Competition

The “World’s Best Beers” have been crowned at the World Beer Awards, with Great Western Light bringing home the title of World’s Best Standard Lager.

“Everyone at Great Western Brewing have worked so hard and contributed so much – either in their expertise or artistry – so to have their efforts recognized as helping craft the Best Standard Lager in the world is truly remarkable,” says Ron Waldman, President and CEO of Great Western Brewing Company. “But whether it’s for a judge in Europe or it’s a cold one for a friend down the road looking for a refreshing reward at the end of a day, our goal’s the same – to make great tasting, high quality beers. In the Standard Lager Category, Clausthaler Classic won in the 2.5% and under group, Great Western Light won in the 2.6 – 4.5% group, and Sam Adams Light (4%), was recognised as Highly Commended. Being evaluated against each other at the final stage saw Great Western Light win the category, and earn the distinction as the best overall Standard Lager.

Viv Jones, Brewmaster at Great Western Brewing adds, “Lagers are the most popular varietal in the world, so to be selected as the Best Standard Lager is a tad overwhelming to be honest.” Jones adds, “I guess more than anything this is a quality message. Quality ingredients crafted by quality people results in a quality beer.”

A release from the World Beer Awards explains, “Beer is a living thing, constantly changing, with a million different combinations of ingredient and process. There was a very high standard of entry this year, from every corner of the globe. Ultimately, what we’re trying to do is to wheedle out the world’s finest beers.”

An international panel of judges spent 5 months and three separate elimination rounds of tasting through hundreds of entries from around the world to find the winners of each style. These style winners then went head to head at a blind tasting event, where the UK’s top brewers selected the best beers in each category.
